Where you live
You might be surprised at the number of local services you have access to, and the facilities that are available for you to use in your neighbourhood. There are several ways to find out about this information and we have provided some of these links below:
Newcastle City Council website
The website has a section called ‘Community and Living’ which provides a wide range of information about the people to know and places to go in your local area. The information is split into the 26 wards in the City and if you are unsure which ward you live in there is a facility to search using your postcode.
The ‘Where You Live’ information includes details of the following:
- Councillors and surgeries - Three councillors represent each of the 26 wards in the City and are elected for a 4-year term. Councillors participate in the work of the council in a variety of ways and help constituents with problems involving the work of the council. The overriding duty of councillors is to the whole community but they have a special duty to their constituents, including those who did not vote for them. Councillors have to agree to follow a code of conduct to ensure high standards in the way they undertake their duties.
- Ward Co-ordinators - All 26 wards in Newcastle have a Ward Co-ordinator. Their main role is to provide a means for local people to have their say about services and policies that affect them and their community. They also ensure that all residents living in the ward have an equal opportunity to access and have a say about the services which affect them.
- Neighbourhood Response Managers - The Neighbourhood Response Teams are the people who keep your streets and local area clean and green. Most wards have a team of six or seven people who are collectively responsible for picking up rubbish, removing graffiti etc. The teams work with other agencies such as the Police and Neighbourhood Wardens in the ward to identify and resolve problems such as graffiti hot spots, abandoned cars and drinking/drugs dens. The teams are supervised by a Neighbourhood Response Manager (NRM) who is the Neighbourhood Services representative in each ward.
- What’s happening in your area – Details of upcoming events, new facilities and useful services.
- Local council services – Information and contact details of useful services in your local area, including Neighbourhood Services, Customer service Centres and libraries.
- Reporting problems – How to report local problems such as rubbish, broken streetlights, abandoned vehicles etc
- Ward Committees - Your Ward Committee is made up of three local councillors. Its purpose is to identify and address local issues. The committee consults and works with local residents and businesses, agencies and voluntary and community sector organisations.
