Emergency services
For all emergency services (Fire, Ambulance and Police) call 999.
If you are deaf or hard of hearing, text mobile telephone number

Police non-emergency issues
If it is less urgent than 999, call telephone number 08456 043 043 for advice, information and action on community safety and anti-social behaviour issues. This frees up the 999 service to handle police emergencies.
Envirocall
If you have an issue regarding Council services, call Envirocall on telephone number 0191 274 4000. You can call to report issues like noise nuisance; rubbish or litter; abandoned vehicles; smoking in enclosed public places; animal fouling; broken street lights; sale of alcohol to the under-aged; and vandalism, graffiti and other deliberate damage to public property. A trained adviser will log all of the information and will report it to the relevant team to sort it out.
Utility services
Electricity - To report a loss of supply, or if you are concerned about the safety of electrical equipment, call Northern Power Grid on telephone number 0800 66 88 77 (24 hour service).
Gas - If you smell gas or are worried about gas safety, call Transco on telephone number 0800 111 999 (24 hour service).
Water - To report a water leak, call Northumbria Water on telephone number 0800 393 084 (24 hour service).
To report a flood, call telephone number 0800 328 7648 (24 hour service).
Health services
If you need medical advice, call NHS Direct on telephone number
0845 46 47 (24 hour service).
NHS Direct provides confidential information on:
- what to do if you or your family are feeling ill
- particular health conditions
- local healthcare services, such as doctors, dentists or late night opening pharmacies
If you need an emergency dentist, you can also call NHS Direct or you can call the Out of Hours Dental Emergency and Advisory Service on telephone number 0845 608 0324.
Social Services
If you need urgent help with social care during the evening or weekend, call telephone number 0191 232 8520 (24 hour service) and ask for the Emergency Duty Team. During office hours, the first point of contact for social care issues should be Social Care Direct on telephone number
0191 278 8377.
Council house repairs
If you live in a Council house and need an emergency repair to your home, contact the Repairs Centre on telephone number 0191 277 8888 (24 hour service, but for emergency repairs only after 6pm).
Please note, if you call after 6pm it is a good idea to check that what you need doing is classed as an emergency by the Repairs Centre. If it is not, you may be charged for the call-out. The person who answers your call will be able to advise you about this.
Environmental issues
To report pollution, damage, or danger to the natural environment and wildlife, call the Environment Agency on telephone number 0800 80 70 60.
